Chapter 24

“Would anyone like seconds?” Matthew asked, glancing around the table. “Sorry that I didn’t cook that much. I was under a time constraint, after all. My dear sister didn’t let me know that I had all of Shadow Woods coming over for lunch.”

“Don’t worry about it, Matthew, you did a fabulous job. The steak was cooked to perfection, my boy. You’ve learned a lot from me.”

“Oh, Mama,” Lucy remarked with a teasing glint in her eyes. “Stop taking credit for what he’s done. It’s genetic, he gets it from me.”

But Arabella didn’t tease her back. She opened her mouth to say something, and then just leaned down, pressing a kiss on Lucy’s temple. “I’m so glad you’re home.”

Lucy straightened her back and cleared her throat. Most of her plate was still unfinished, so she gave the rest of Matthew, who was quite ravenous for the food he’d made.

“I have a very important question to ask the rest of you,” she said. “Does the rest of the town know the full truth about witches yet? As in, have we all been outed, more or less?”

John scratched the back of his neck. “Yes.”

“So, a certain video has been released to the public?”

“How do you know about that?” Matthew asked, furrowing his brows together. “It just happened!”

“She’s from the future, Matt, of course she’s going to know,” Daphne replied. Then, she turned towards her aunt. “A video was released of my fight with Ulrich Wood from a while ago. I don’t know who leaked it, but it got out to the press, and now most of Shadow Woods knows about the existence of witches and magic.”

“Did they see your face?” Lucy asked.

“No, but they definitely saw some spells being thrown around. That was the nail in the coffin.”

“That’s… Wow. Okay.” Lucy nodded, pressing her lips into a thin line. “In that case, we need to move to Plan B, which is making sure Allen Fitzsimmons doesn’t get elected.”

“We’ve been trying that for a long while, but nothing has been working so far,” Matthew remarked. A pile of mashed potatoes sat on his plate. “I don’t know what else we could do against that man. I think he’s too powerful.”

John sighed. “He’s got a lot of contacts and influence in the business world. Many people want to see him elected. My dad has promised them great things once he’s in office.”

“We can’t sit around and do nothing while that man gets to be mayor. He’ll destroy our community, I know he will,” Lucy said, an intense determination to her words that lit a fire under Daphne. “I understand he’s your dad, but you have to admit that he’s not a good man.”

“Believe me, I know. I’ve known for a long time.” John met Daphne’s gaze. “I promised Daphne that I was going to do everything I can to stop him and get him arrested for his crimes, but there’s so much we have to uncover. I got a video of him speaking with a hitman, but I can’t even use it in court!”

“So? Leak it to the press,” Lucy replied.
